World-first four-edged high-feed drill from Ceratizit sets new performance standard

The WTX HFDS from Ceratizit is “the first and only four-edged high-feed drill on the market”. It offers “impressive cutting data and tool life in steel and cast iron materials”, courtesy of the fourth cutting edge.

Says Felix Meggle, Ceratizit Group’s product manager drilling tools: “No matter what we put it up against, the WTX HFDS is faster every time. Machining times are reduced by up to 66% in comparison with standard two-edged and three-edged high-speed and high-feed drills.”

Designed and engineered as a specialist tool for steel and cast iron, this increased performance has no impact on endurance, with tool life in excess of existing competitor drills.

“The WTX HFDS is far more than just a speed and productivity merchant. It also delivers high quality, in terms of positioning accuracy, tolerance and the roundness/cylindricity of the holes produced,” Meggle adds. For example, average positioning accuracy of 0.03 mm for the entire hole depth can be achieved, which given the elevated cutting data is a significant achievement. With a WTX HFDS 6.80 mm diameter drill having a 5xD flute length drilling 1.7331 / 16MnCr5 steel, a surface speed (Vc) of 120 m/min and a feedrate of 0.50 mm/rev is producing holes to an H7 tolerance. This is possible due to the innovative pyramid-shaped drill point, which is completely unlike a conventional chisel edge and allows for exceptional centring of the drill. Assisting the performance of the WTX HFDS drills are the four continuous spiral coolant holes that maximise coolant delivery to every cutting edge, while maintaining the drill’s core strength and stability. In addition, the WTX HFDS produces only a slight burr when entering and exiting the hole.

A global first like the WTX HFDS leaves nothing to chance, and the final piece of its development was the use of the legendary Dragonskin DPX14S coating from Ceratizit. The TiAlN nanolayer is resistant to temperatures of up to 1,000°C, clearing the last potential obstacle in the way of the new four-edged solid carbide drill delivering its exceptional levels of performance. The WTX HFDS drills are available in stock in diameters from 6.00 to 16.00 mm, with deliveries commencing in May 2020 to coincide with the publication of the latest ‘Up2Date’ catalogue.
